The Dutch pearl traders were searching the area for new and different supplies of pearls.  A huge source of tin was discovered and in the 19th Century these vast resources attracted many Chinese migrants while the Portuguese settled here to transport the tin to other parts of the world. A combination of Portuguese and Chinese cultures, food and architecture has given this island a culture of its own while there is still a strong Chinese influence in this wealthy city.
